Why Sipadan is Special

Sipadan is the only oceanic island in Malaysia, rising 600 meters from the seabed of the Celebes Sea. The island's coral reef drops vertically into the abyss just meters from shore, creating some of the most spectacular wall diving on the planet.

Green and hawksbill turtles are seen on virtually every dive — often in groups of 10 or more. The famous Barracuda Point regularly features massive tornado-like schools of chevron barracuda, while whitetip reef sharks, bumphead parrotfish, and schools of jacks provide constant action.

Getting There from Korea

Flights: From Incheon, fly to Kota Kinabalu (BKI) or Tawau (TWU) via Kuala Lumpur. From Tawau, it's a 1-hour drive to Semporna, then a 45-minute boat ride to Sipadan. Total travel time: approximately 10-12 hours.

Where to Stay

You cannot stay on Sipadan itself (no accommodation since 2005 for conservation). Stay at resorts on Mabul Island (5 minutes from Sipadan) or in Semporna town. Mabul resorts range from $80-300/night including diving packages. Kapalai Water Village offers overwater bungalows from $200/night.

What to Eat

Semporna's waterfront restaurants serve excellent fresh seafood. Try the butter prawns, chili crab, and grilled squid at the Ocean Tourism Centre. Most Mabul resorts include buffet meals in their packages.

Important Note

Sipadan permits are limited to 120 divers per day. Book your resort at least 2-3 months in advance to guarantee a permit. Best diving conditions: April to December.
